Japan Lost and Found Service was born from a deeply personal and unforgettable experience — the moment my wife and I realized how difficult it can be to retrieve a lost item abroad.
Our Dream Trip to Switzerland — and an Unexpected Turn
In the summer of 2025, my wife and I traveled to Switzerland — a country that had captured my heart years earlier during a trip with my brother. I had always dreamed of coming back, this time with my future wife.
Switzerland was everything I hoped it would be — breathtaking mountain views, crystal-clear air, and perfectly reliable trains.
We hiked nearly 13 kilometers a day, took wedding photos at Kleine Scheidegg beneath the Jungfrau, and even crossed into France to see Mont Blanc.
It was the kind of trip we would remember forever.

A Nightmare Journey Home
Our return, however, didn’t go as planned.
A small timing mistake caused us to miss our flight, forcing us to buy new tickets — costing over $2,500 USD.
Then, flight delays from Zurich to Frankfurt and finally to Beijing created a race against time.
When we landed in Beijing, our connection to Tokyo was leaving in less than 40 minutes — and there was another unexpected security check.
We rushed through, frantically tossing belongings into trays, sprinted through the terminal, somehow making it to the gate just before boarding closed.
Realizing What I’d Lost
It wasn’t until we landed in Japan that it hit me —
I had left my MacBook at Beijing Airport’s security checkpoint.
In panic, I asked a kind Chinese-American passenger who had been sitting nearby for help. He called the airport, but all they gave me was an email address.
I sent multiple messages for three days before finally hearing back:
“Your laptop has been found. However, we cannot ship it internationally. Please pick it up in person.”
That sentence changed everything.
I had already spent thousands of dollars, used up my paid leave, and now they were asking me to fly to Beijing again just to pick up a lost item?

The Turning Point — “No Traveler Should Go Through This”
At that moment, I realized something powerful:
“No traveler should ever have to experience this again.”
Japan is one of the safest, most organized countries in the world — yet when travelers lose something here, they face the same frustrations:
