Lost Backpack Near Mt. Fuji Delivered to a Hotel in Osaka Before Departure

A traveler from Malaysia lost a backpack near Kawaguchiko.
By the time the bag was found, she had already moved on to Kyoto and Osaka, so going back to the Mt. Fuji area to collect it herself was not realistic.
In this case study, we’ll show how our service confirmed where the backpack was being kept, handled the pickup process on the traveler’s behalf, and arranged delivery to her hotel in Osaka before departure.

✈️ Initial Situation

The traveler lost her backpack near Kawaguchiko, around a roadside area close to the location she shared with us.
At the time of her first inquiry, it had not yet been confirmed where the bag was being kept. She shared the approximate time she lost it, the bag’s color, and some of the contents inside, including chargers, a retainer, jewelry, and other personal items.
Because this loss happened outdoors rather than inside a station, hotel, or airport, the first step was not retrieval but confirmation.
For that reason, we first handled the case under our success-based Location Assistance service. At the initial stage, the storage location had not yet been identified. Shortly after that, however, the backpack’s storage location was confirmed, and the case moved into the next stage: how to get it back before the traveler left Japan.

🔍 Step 1: Reviewing the Return Options After the Backpack Was Confirmed

Once the backpack’s storage location was confirmed, the next step was to decide which return method was the most realistic.
The traveler shared that:
  • she was already in the Kyoto area
  • the last part of her trip would be in Osaka
  • she had limited time left before leaving Japan
Given that situation, going back to the Mt. Fuji area herself would have been difficult. We needed to decide quickly whether:
  • she should try to collect it herself
  • we should handle the pickup and send it to her hotel in Japan
  • or, if timing failed, arrange international shipping after she returned home
As a result, delivery to her hotel in Osaka became the most realistic option. It allowed the bag to be returned within the remaining time in Japan while also keeping the overall burden and cost lower than sending it overseas.

🕵️ Step 2: Handling the Authorization Process for Pickup

Because the backpack had to be collected on the traveler’s behalf, we needed to complete the authorization process from the owner.
We provided a simple authorization format and asked her to fill in her full name exactly as written in her passport, then sign and return it.
After receiving the completed authorization, we proceeded with the pickup arrangements with the storage location.
At the same time, we also confirmed the hotel details in Osaka so that the package could be received smoothly under the correct reservation name.
At this stage, the most important point was not just arranging pickup, but making sure everything could move quickly enough to reach Osaka before departure.

📦 Step 3: Shipping the Backpack to the Hotel in Osaka

Once the authorization process was completed, we handled the pickup process on the traveler’s behalf and arranged shipment directly to her hotel in Osaka.
We also contacted the hotel in advance so that the front desk would be ready to receive the package under the reservation name she had provided.
The goal was not simply to send the bag somewhere in Japan, but to make sure it arrived at the right hotel during the narrow window before checkout.
The backpack was shipped successfully and scheduled to arrive at the hotel the following morning.

✅ Final Delivery Before Departure

The package arrived at the Osaka hotel as planned, and the traveler later confirmed that she had received the backpack safely and that everything inside was in perfect condition.
This case is a good example of a situation where:
  • the item was first lost outdoors
  • the storage location was later confirmed
  • the traveler was still in Japan but had already moved far away
  • the best solution was not self-pickup or international shipping, but fast domestic hotel delivery before departure
By moving quickly once the bag was confirmed, we were able to complete the recovery while the traveler was still in Japan.
