Lost Backpack on the Train to Haneda Returned to the USA
A traveler from the USA left a backpack on a train between Oshiage and Haneda Airport.
Railway staff had already indicated where the item was being held, but the traveler was unable to reach the local station directly and needed someone in Japan to handle the next steps.
In this case study, we’ll show how our service confirmed the backpack, retrieved it from the station, checked the contents, and arranged international shipping so it was safely returned to the USA.
💬 Customer Review
“The most helpful part of the service was the confirmation of the lost items being found and located along with details and pictures. The most impressive aspect was the extremely quick responses with detailed information. The other service I had contacted did not respond until 2 days later and did not seem to read the information I had already sent them.”— 🇺🇸 K.F., USA

✈️ Initial Situation
The traveler left his backpack on the overhead rack of a train from Oshiage to Haneda Airport Terminal 3.
He had already contacted railway customer service and was told that the backpack had been found and was being kept at a local station. He also had a reference number for the item and a description of the contents.
However, even with that information, he was unable to get connected with the station directly and needed someone in Japan to take over the next steps.
At that point, he contacted Japan Lost and Found Service for help with confirming the item, retrieving it, and shipping it to the USA.
🔍 Step 1: Confirming the Item and Preparing for Pickup
The first thing we did was review all the available details so there would be no confusion when contacting the station.
What We Confirmed
We reviewed:
- the railway line and direction of travel
- the approximate time the backpack was left on the train
- the stations where the traveler got on and off
- the backpack description
- the reference number already provided by railway customer service
- the key contents inside the bag
The traveler also sent additional reference photos for items he especially wanted us to check.
Because the item had already been reported found, this case was less about searching widely and more about making sure the station really had the correct bag and arranging a smooth pickup.
🕵️ Step 2: Contacting the Station and Retrieving the Backpack
We contacted the station directly in Japanese and confirmed that the backpack was there.
After that, we arranged the pickup and retrieved the bag on the traveler’s behalf.
Once recovered, we checked the contents and confirmed that the backpack included items such as:
- clothing
- snacks
- gloves
- a handheld gaming device
We then sent photos of the bag and contents so the traveler could confirm that the most important items were present before shipping.
This step turned out to be especially valuable, because the traveler later said that the quick confirmation and detailed photos were one of the most helpful parts of the service.
📦 Step 3: Deciding What to Ship and Preparing International Delivery
Once the backpack was safely in our hands, the next step was to determine the most practical shipping plan.
Because the bag was fairly large and heavy, the initial shipping estimate came out high. We discussed several options with the traveler, including whether to:
- remove lower-priority items
- ship only the most important contents
- or send the full backpack and everything inside
The traveler first considered reducing the package to only the highest-priority items. However, after we checked alternative courier pricing, the full shipment became more realistic, and he decided to proceed with sending the entire backpack and contents.
After payment was completed, we prepared the package for international shipment to the USA.
🌍 Step 4: Customs Delay Caused by Food Items
The shipment was sent successfully, and the initial delivery estimate was very fast.
However, once the package entered the customs process, there was an unexpected issue: because the backpack contained food items, additional documentation was required for U.S. import procedures.
To help resolve the issue, we:
- responded to questions from the courier
- checked the specific snack items in the package
- asked the traveler to help confirm the product details
- submitted the necessary information for customs review
Because of the season and the customs backlog, the delay lasted longer than originally expected. During that time, we stayed in contact with both the traveler and the courier, and the traveler also contacted the local courier side in the USA to help push the review forward.
Eventually, the package cleared customs and proceeded to final delivery.
✅ Final Delivery
After the customs issue was resolved, the backpack was delivered to the traveler in the USA.
He later confirmed that:
- all items had arrived
- everything was in good condition
- there was no damage
- the packaging quality was excellent
Even though the customs delay made this case longer than originally expected, the important result was that the backpack and all major belongings were safely returned.
