Lost Tablet at Narita Airport Safely Delivered via Korea
A traveler based in Canada accidentally left a tablet behind at Narita Airport Terminal 1.
The airport’s lost & found center had already confirmed that they were keeping the device, but the traveler was scheduled to leave Japan and could not return to pick it up in person.
In this case study, we’ll show how our service helped secure the tablet in Japan, arrange international shipment, and support the process until it finally reached the owner through a trusted friend in Korea.
🚀 Quick Case Overview
Traveler
- Traveler living in Canada
Lost item
- Tablet
Where it was lost
- Narita Airport Terminal 1
When they contacted us
- After Narita Airport’s lost & found had already confirmed they were keeping the tablet
Main concerns
- At that time, postal conditions in Canada were unstable, and it was hard to predict when a parcel would arrive
- The traveler had upcoming stays in Korea and other places, so there were multiple possible delivery addresses
- Because the device contains a battery, international shipping rules are stricter
- The traveler could not go back to Narita to pick it up in person
Plan used
- Item Retrieval Service — We acted as the local contact in Japan to receive the item and arrange international shipping
Outcome
- We received the tablet from Narita Airport in Japan
- We shipped it to a trusted friend living in Korea
- After customs clearance, the tablet was safely handed from that friend to the traveler
✈️ Initial Situation
Before contacting us, the traveler had already taken the most important first step:
they contacted Narita Airport Terminal 1 Lost & Found, and the staff confirmed that the tablet was there.
However, the real difficulty started after the item was found.
- The traveler lives in Canada
- They had an upcoming stay in Korea
- They also had access to an address in the United States
On top of that, postal operations in Canada were unstable at that time, so sending the tablet directly there involved more uncertainty and possible delay.
The traveler contacted Japan Lost and Found Service because they needed help with the practical next step: receiving the tablet in Japan and arranging a workable shipment route.
🔍 Step 1: Reviewing the Delivery Options
The first thing we did was organize the possible delivery options and compare them carefully.
Options We Reviewed
Together with the traveler, we reviewed:
- Their home address in Canada
- An address in Korea where they would be staying
- An address in the United States
- A trusted friend’s address in Korea
What We Considered
For each option, we looked at:
- Whether someone could reliably receive the package
- How easily the item could later be passed to the traveler
- How postal conditions and customs might affect the shipment
At that time, sending the tablet directly to Canada involved additional uncertainty because of unstable postal conditions.
During this discussion, the traveler shared that:
- they would soon visit Korea, and
- they had a friend living there whom they would meet later
The traveler also mentioned that receiving a parcel personally could be difficult depending on timing, so using their friend’s address in Korea felt more reliable.
Final Plan
Based on this, we agreed on the following approach:
- Ship the tablet from Japan to a trusted friend in Korea
- Have the traveler receive it directly from that friend later
This gave the shipment a clear and practical path back to its owner.
🕵️ Step 2: Coordinating with Narita Airport Lost & Found
Once the destination plan was clear, the next challenge was moving the tablet from Narita Airport to a safe location in Japan while the owner was no longer able to pick it up in person.
Because the traveler was not going back to Narita, the airport needed:
- Clear authorization from the owner
- A specific recipient in Japan who was allowed to receive the item
What We Did
To support this process, we:
- Prepared a simple English email template the traveler could use to authorize the release
- Explained what information needed to be included, such as the traveler’s full name, a simple description of the tablet, the airport’s reference information, and the local recipient information in Japan
- Asked the traveler to send the email directly from their own account to Narita Airport Lost & Found
This kept the traveler as the official person communicating with the airport, while we handled the practical work on the Japan side.
After the authorization was accepted, the tablet was released for domestic handling in Japan, and we received it safely on the traveler’s behalf.
Once it was in our care, we confirmed that the item matched the traveler’s description before moving on to international shipping.
📦 Step 3: Preparing International Shipment to Korea
With the tablet safely in our hands in Japan, the focus shifted to international shipment.
Because the item was an electronic device with a built-in battery, we had to make sure it could be shipped under the relevant conditions.
What We Checked
Together with the traveler, we reviewed:
- The available shipping methods
- The likely shipping cost
- The expected delivery time
- The battery-related requirements for international shipment
As part of this process, we also confirmed:
- The battery type
- The approximate watt-hour (Wh) rating
This helped us confirm that the tablet could be sent under normal cross-border shipping conditions for battery-powered devices.
Shipment to Korea
After the shipping method was confirmed, we:
- Verified the friend’s address in Korea
- Sent the tablet using a trackable international service
- Shared the tracking number and link with the traveler
That allowed the traveler to follow the parcel while it was on the way.
🌍 Step 4: Customs in Korea and Final Handover
When the package arrived in Korea, it went through customs inspection.
This part took some time, and additional information was needed during the customs process.
Information Needed for Customs
The Korean side requested details such as:
- What was inside the package
- The declared value of the tablet
- The shipping cost
- Whether any insurance was included
Based on the shipment we had prepared, we were able to explain:
- What had been written on the customs declaration
- The declared item type
- The shipment value and shipping charge
We shared this information with the traveler so they could provide accurate details on the Korea side.
Final Delivery
After customs clearance was completed:
- The friend in Korea received the parcel
- The traveler later met that friend in person
- The tablet was handed back safely to its owner
Although the process involved several steps across Japan, Korea, and Canada as the traveler’s home base, the important result was that the original device safely made its way back to the traveler.
