Lost Item in a Hotel or Restaurant in Japan? Here’s How to Get It Back Fast

Left item behind at your hotel, ryokan, or restaurant in Japan?
Don’t panic — Japan’s Lost and Found system is one of the most reliable in the world, and if you act quickly, there’s a high chance your item can be recovered — even if you’ve already returned home.
This guide walks you through how to get your lost belongings back from hotels, ryokan, cafés, or restaurants in Japan — and what to do if your item has already been handed over to the police.

Step 1: Contact the Hotel or Ryokan Immediately

If you realized you left item behind after check-out, contact the hotel as soon as possible.
The faster you act, the better your chances of recovery.

Why hotels rarely contact guests

Many travelers wonder, “Why didn’t the hotel call me?”
In Japan, most hotels don’t proactively reach out to guests for these reasons:
  • Privacy protection:
    • Guest information (names, phone numbers, emails) is strictly managed. Contacting you without consent can violate privacy laws.
  • No standard policy:
    • Many business hotels have no formal rule to contact guests about lost items.
  • Operational efficiency:
    • Hotels handle many lost items daily — calling each guest would be unrealistic.
On the other hand, ryokan (traditional inns) often provide more personal service and may contact you if they find something.
Still, you should always be the one to reach out first for the fastest results.

What to do

  1. Call or email the hotel or ryokan directly.
    1. Your item may already be stored in the lost property room.
  1. Provide accurate details:
      • Date and time of check-out
      • Room number
      • Description of the item (e.g., “black jacket, size M” or “silver necklace”)
💡
Tip: Emailing in English is fine — most hotels use translation tools to assist.

Step 2: Contact the Restaurant or Café

If you left item at a restaurant, café, or izakaya, call them immediately — especially small, family-run places where lost items may not be stored long.

What to do

  1. Call the restaurant directly.
    1. Check opening hours via Google Maps or Tabelog.
  1. Provide details:
      • Date and time of your visit
      • Seat location (e.g., “window seat,” “counter seat”)
      • Clear description (e.g., “black wallet,” “beige scarf”)
💡
Tip: Many restaurants don’t have a formal Lost & Found system. Acting quickly — ideally the same day — greatly increases your chances.

Step 3: File a Lost Property Report with the Police

If the hotel or restaurant can’t find your item, it may already have been turned over to the local police station.

Filing a Lost Property Report

  • If you’re in Japan:
    • Visit a nearby police station or koban and file a “Lost Property Report” (ishitsubutsu todoke).
You’ll receive a certificate of submission.
  • If you’re overseas:

What you need to collect it

  • Valid photo ID (passport or residence card)
  • Proof of ownership (e.g., receipt, photo, or description)

Step 4: Need Help from Overseas?

Even if you’ve already left Japan, recovering your item is still possible — but it can be difficult due to language barriers, paperwork, and shipping restrictions.
