Lost Item Found After You Left Japan? How to Get It Back
If your lost item was found after you left Japan, do not assume it is still at the place that first contacted you. Items may be transferred from stations, airports, hotels, or other facilities to the police.

1. Confirm Where the Item Is Being Held
Before arranging anything, confirm:
- The current holding location
- Any lost property or reference number
- The pickup or storage deadline
If the item has already been transferred to the police, confirm the police station name and reference number.
2. Ask What Collection Options Are Available
Once you know where the item is being held, ask that office what collection options are available.
Some facilities may allow collection by another person or delivery within Japan, while others use different procedures. International shipping is not available from every holding facility, and return options depend on the item and destination.

3. If the Item Is Being Held by the Police
If your item has been transferred to a police station, contact that station and confirm the current status, reference number, pickup or storage deadline, and available collection options. Procedures vary by police station and situation.
The National Police Agency states that found property reported to the police is generally stored for three months. If your item is at a police station, do not delay contacting the station.
